Jimmy McGovern
Writer
Liverpool born Jimmy McGovern has built a formidable reputation writing powerful dramas for the stage and screen, often based on real events or socially vital issues.
His great talent is in combining his subject matter with characters who are so believable you feel you know them, and in evoking a strong sense of time and place (often the North West of England).
McGovern’s writing credits reads like a list of classic television. Having honed his skill working on Brookside, his major breakthrough came with Cracker, one of the best-loved UK TV shows of recent history. With The Lakes and The Street, McGovern continued to give us great characters driven by believable situations, but it was with his BAFTA award winning writing for Hillsborough that his craft was perfected.
It is this incendiary talent that McGovern has brought to the writing of King Cotton, his first musical, and one which stands triumphantly alongside his very best work.
His script for Mary Queen of Scots starring Scarlett Johannson is currently in production.
